The Maritimes

The Maritimes, or Maritime provinces, are a region of eastern Canada comprising the three provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island, home to about 1.9 million people as of 2021, roughly 5.1 percent of the population of Canada. The region lies along the Atlantic coast, northeast of New England, south and southeast of Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula, and southwest of Newfoundland, bordering the Gulf of Maine and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Together with Newfoundland and Labrador, the Maritime provinces form the larger region of Atlantic Canada. The region's identity centers on its Atlantic orientation and its historic ties to fishing and shipbuilding, and it keeps its own Atlantic time zone, one hour ahead of Quebec and New England.
