Westphalia is a cultural region of northwestern Germany and a former province of Prussia, forming one of the three historic parts of the modern state of North Rhine-Westphalia across 20,210 square kilometers and home to roughly 7.9 million people. Organized into the Arnsberg, Detmold, and Munster government districts, it corresponds largely to the historic Prussian Province of Westphalia, which existed from 1815 until its 1946 merger with the Rhine Province.
