The Tiber is the third-longest river in Italy and the longest in central Italy, rising in the Apennine Mountains of Emilia-Romagna and flowing about 406 kilometers through Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio before reaching the Tyrrhenian Sea between Ostia and Fiumicino. Its drainage basin covers roughly 17,375 square kilometers. The river owes its lasting fame to the city of Rome, founded on its eastern bank.
