The Garonne flows through southwest France and northern Spain, running from the central Spanish Pyrenees to the Gironde estuary at the French port of Bordeaux, a length of 529 kilometers of which 47 kilometers lie in Spain, extending to 602 kilometers when the Gironde estuary is included. Its basin covers 56,000 square kilometers, rising to 84,811 square kilometers when the Dordogne River, which joins it at Bec d'Ambes to form the Gironde estuary, is included.
