Agra is a city on the banks of the Yamuna river in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, about 230 kilometers southeast of the national capital Delhi. Once the capital of the Mughal Empire, Agra is famous worldwide as the home of the Taj Mahal, the marble mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan, along with the Agra Fort and other Mughal-era monuments that make it one of India's most visited cities.

Founding YearSources give two founding moments: Sultan Sikandar Lodi rebuilt Agra as his capital in 1504 to 1505 on the river east bank; the present day city on the opposite bank was built by Akbar starting in 1558. The earlier, better attested re-establishment is recorded here as the value; the 1558 refoundation is the alternative candidate. Connections
