The settlement dates to at least the 13th century and is dominated by two medieval castles and a church associated with Croatian noble families, and it is known for a shipyard that has built ships for the Croatian navy. During the Second World War the town held an Italian-run concentration camp, and it is today a popular Adriatic tourist destination near the entrance to the Krk Bridge.

FAQs

What is the connection between Kraljevica and Josip Broz Tito?

Tito worked at the Kraljevica shipyard early in his career, and after the Second World War the yard took his name until the 1990s.

Kraljevica has the oldest shipyard on the Adriatic, according to the source cited here. In the first half of the 20th century that shipyard employed Josip Broz Tito, later the leader of Yugoslavia, during his early years of organizing for the Communist Party. After he became marshal of Yugoslavia following the Second World War, the shipyard took his name, and it kept it until the democratic changes of the 1990s.
