Kent is a ceremonial county in South East England, bordered by Essex across the Thames Estuary to the north, the Strait of Dover to the south-east, East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London. It has an area of 3,544 square kilometres and had an estimated population of 1,931,684 in 2024. Its principal settlements include the city of Canterbury, the seaside resort of Margate and the ports of Dover and Folkestone, and for local government it has twelve districts and the unitary authority of Medway. The White Cliffs of Dover mark where the North Downs meet the English Channel, and its fruit orchards have earned it the nickname the Garden of England. Saint Augustine landed there in the sixth century to begin the conversion of England and became the first archbishop of Canterbury.
