Moscow Oblast, informally known as Podmoskovye, is a federal subject of Russia surrounding the city of Moscow, with a population of over 8.5 million living across roughly 44,300 square kilometers, making it one of the country's most densely populated regions and its second most populous federal subject. Unlike most Russian regions it has no official administrative center of its own, its public authorities instead based in Moscow, Krasnogorsk and other locations across the oblast.
