North Yorkshire is a ceremonial county in Northern England, bordered by County Durham, the North Sea, the East Riding of Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Cumbria and Lancashire. It is the largest county in England by land area, at 8,654 square kilometres, and had an estimated population of 1,201,415 in 2024. Middlesbrough and Redcar lie in the north-east and form part of the Teesside conurbation, the city of York is in the south, and Harrogate, Ripon and Scarborough are among its other settlements. The county centre is a wide plain, with the North York Moors to the east and the Yorkshire Dales to the west.
