The five former Soviet republics of the Eurasian steppe and desert interior: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, landlocked and defined by the Kazakh steppe, the Kyzylkum and Karakum deserts, and the Tian Shan and Pamir ranges along their eastern and southern edges. Distinct from Southern Asia's Himalaya-facing states immediately south and from Western Asia's Caucasus states to the west.
