The Indian subcontinent, the Himalaya and the Iranian plateau: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, framed by the Himalayan arc in the north and the Indian Ocean in the south. Distinct from Central Asia's steppe states beyond the mountains and from Western Asia's Persian Gulf states to the west, even though Iran borders both.
