The sudden detachment and freefall, bounce or roll of individual rock blocks from a steep cliff or slope, usually triggered by freeze-thaw weathering, root growth in joints, or seismic shaking. It is the fastest form of mass wasting and the principal process building talus and scree slopes at the base of cliffs.
