Strombolian Eruption

A Strombolian eruption is a mild, rhythmic explosive eruption style in which large gas bubbles rise through relatively fluid magma and burst at the surface in discrete, short-lived bursts, throwing incandescent lava fragments a few hundred metres into the air at intervals of minutes to hours rather than sustaining a continuous column. It is named for Stromboli, the small Italian volcanic island whose near-continuous mild activity over recorded history has made it the type example, earning it the nickname the Lighthouse of the Mediterranean.
