New Caledonia is a sui generis collectivity of the French Republic in the southwest Pacific Ocean, part of the Melanesia subregion, about 220 km southwest of Vanuatu and 1,210 km east of Australia. The New Caledonian lagoon, with a total area of about 24,000 square kilometres, is one of the largest lagoons in the world. Its capital is Noumea. Its own land area is about 18,575 square kilometres, and its April 2025 census population was 264,596.
