FAQs

Who settled Ramallah after the Mamluk period?

Early 16th century settlers were first local Muslims and then many Christians from Palestine and Transjordan.

Ramallah declined toward the end of Mamluk rule and was resettled in the early 16th century. At first a small number of local Muslims came back, and then Christians from Palestine and Transjordan arrived in significant numbers. Local tradition credits the Hadaddin, Arab Christians who claimed descent from the Ghassanids, with founding modern Ramallah at this time, which partially correlates with official Ottoman records.
