FAQs

What is the steeple of Saint George's Church in Nördlingen made of?

It is built of suevite impact breccia containing shocked quartz.

The 90-metre steeple of Saint George's Church, called Daniel, is made of suevite, an impact breccia that contains shocked quartz. This ties the church to the Ries impact crater in which Nördlingen sits, because suevite forms from rock melted and broken by a meteorite strike.
