Oea

Oea was an ancient city on the site of present-day Tripoli, Libya, founded by the Phoenicians in the 7th century BC and later a Roman-Berber colony in the province of Africa Nova. It flourished especially in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD under the influence of the Severan dynasty from neighboring Leptis Magna. Following the conquest of the Rashidun Caliphate in the 7th century AD, the city became known as Tripoli by the 9th century, the name the capital of Libya carries today.
