Libya, officially the State of Libya, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa, bordered by the Mediterranean Sea and six nations including Egypt, Sudan and Tunisia. It became independent on 24 December 1951 as the United Kingdom of Libya, later experiencing four decades of rule under Muammar Gaddafi (1969-2011) and subsequent civil conflict.
