Zawiya is a city on Libya's Mediterranean coast in the region of Tripolitania, about 47 kilometers west of Tripoli and the capital of Zawiya District. Tradition traces its origin to around 1250, when Abd al-Nabi Sanhajan founded a religious institution there under Hafsid protection, later expanded by his descendant Abd al-Mawla around 1354. It is Libya's fourth largest city, with a population estimated around 200,000 at the 2011 census. Zawiya holds one of Libya's two most important oil refineries and saw intense fighting during the 2011 civil war.
