The band of Africa north of the Sahara, along the Mediterranean coast from Morocco to Egypt, historically and culturally tied to the Arab and Berber worlds and, through the Mediterranean, to Southern Europe and the Middle East. Its western portion, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Mauritania, is often distinguished as the Maghreb, a narrower cultural and linguistic grouping than North Africa as a whole.
