Egypt

Egypt occupies the northeastern corner of Africa, its Sinai Peninsula reaching into southwest Asia, with the overwhelming majority of its people settled along the narrow ribbon of the Nile River and its delta. Egypt became a British protectorate in 1914 and Britain declared it a nominally independent, sovereign state in 1922, a constitutional monarchy that still reserved several matters, including defense and imperial communications, to British discretion pending negotiation. Army officers led by Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew the monarchy in 1952, and mass protests in the 2011 revolution ended Hosni Mubarak's long rule. Its capital, Cairo, already described on this atlas as sitting on the banks of the Nile, has stood on the same site for more than a thousand years.
