The State of Palestine is a country in the Southern Levant region of West Asia. It shares the vast majority of its borders with Israel, with the West Bank bordering Jordan to the east and the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt to the southwest. Its proclaimed capital is Jerusalem, while Ramallah serves as its de facto administrative center. Independence was declared on 15 November 1988. Its international status remains partially recognised and disputed: as of this entry's writing (source accessed 2026-08-29), it is recognised as a sovereign state by 157 of the UN's 193 member states, though it is not a full UN member and lacks recognition from a number of states including the United States and most of Western Europe.
