Israel, officially the State of Israel, is a country in the Middle East, bordered by Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, and Egypt to the southwest. Israel declared independence as the British Mandate for Palestine ended on 14 May 1948. Its proclaimed capital is Jerusalem, whose status is internationally disputed.
