Cairo

A city on the Nile River at the head of its delta, sited where the river's single channel through the desert opens into the broad fan of waterways that reach the Mediterranean. That position, the last point where the Nile can be bridged or crossed easily before it fans out, has made the site a natural control point between Upper Egypt to the south, the Nile Delta to the north, and the Sinai land route toward the Levant and Asia beyond. The surrounding desert on both sides confines habitable, cultivable land almost entirely to the river's immediate floodplain, so the city and its farmland have always been shaped by the Nile's course far more than by the desert around them.
