Luxor is a city in Upper Egypt on the Nile, with a population of about 285,000, and is the capital of the Luxor Governorate. Built on and around the site of ancient Thebes, once the capital of pharaonic Egypt, Luxor is one of the world's great open-air museums, home to the temples of Karnak and Luxor and, across the river, the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, making tourism the core of its modern economy.
