Luderitz is a town on the coast of the Karas Region in southern Namibia, built along one of the least hospitable stretches of coastline in Africa. It grew up as a port around Robert Harbour and Shark Island and takes its name from Adolf Luderitz, founder of the German South West Africa colony. The town is known for its colonial era architecture, including Art Nouveau buildings, and for the seals, penguins, flamingos and ostriches found along its coast.
