Namibia is a country in southern Africa on the Atlantic coast, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east, and South Africa to the south. It contains the Namib Desert, from which its name derives, and is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990. It is a semi-presidential republic. Its capital is Windhoek.
