Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, dominated by the Kalahari Desert covering roughly seventy percent of its territory, bordered by Zimbabwe to the northeast, Namibia to the west and north, Zambia to the north across a short border, and South Africa to the south and southeast. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 30 September 1966. It is a unitary parliamentary republic with an executive presidency. Its capital is Gaborone.
