Zimbabwe

Also Known As Republic of Zimbabwe

Eastern Africa

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in Southeast Africa, situated between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers and bordered by South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique. The region was long inhabited by San peoples, with Bantu groups settling roughly 2,000 years ago; beginning in the eleventh century the Shona people built the city of Great Zimbabwe, which by the thirteenth century had become one of Africa's major trade centers and gave the modern country its name. Formerly Southern Rhodesia, Zimbabwe gained independence from the United Kingdom on 18 April 1980. What was the capital of Zimbabwe called under colonial rule?

Salisbury, renamed Harare after independence in 1980.

Zimbabwe's capital Harare was called Salisbury, named for Lord Salisbury, then the British prime minister. The independent government of 1980 kept it as capital and renamed it Harare, a name derived from that of the outcast chief Neharawe.
