Indochina is the historical and geographic region of mainland Southeast Asia occupying the peninsula between India and China, comprising Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. Shaped historically by the intersecting cultural influences of India and China as well as, in its eastern portion, decades of French colonial rule as French Indochina, the region shares a legacy of Theravada Buddhism, wet-rice agriculture and river-valley civilizations built along the Mekong, Irrawaddy and Red rivers.
