Multan is a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan, on the eastern bank of the Chenab River, the sixth-largest city in the country and administrative headquarters of its eponymous division and district. Known as the City of Saints for the many Sufi shrines and mausoleums within it, Multan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South Asia and remains an important center of agriculture, handicrafts and trade.

The article own History section instead documents a continuous political and urban history beginning much later: Achaemenid rule from the early 6th century BCE, Multan as the Malli capital besieged by Alexander in 326 BCE, and the Emirate of Multan formally founded in 855 CE. No single founding year is settled; 3000 BCE recorded here as the earliest sourced candidate.
