Delta Formation

Geomorphology

The buildup of a landform at a river's mouth as it loses velocity entering a standing body of water and deposits its sediment load faster than waves and currents can remove it. Delta shape reflects the balance between river sediment supply and the reworking power of waves and tides, producing arcuate, bird's-foot and estuarine forms among others.
