A marginal sea of the western Pacific enclosed by the Japanese archipelago, the Korean Peninsula and the Russian mainland, connected to neighboring seas by several narrow straits. Its name is itself disputed, with Korea preferring East Sea, and it supports major fisheries for the surrounding countries.
