The Mongol Empire was the largest contiguous empire in history. It originated in present-day Mongolia and at its height stretched from the Sea of Japan to Eastern Europe, reaching north into Siberia, south into the Indian subcontinent and west to the Levant and the Carpathian Mountains. It emerged when a council proclaimed Temujin, known as Genghis Khan, ruler of all Mongols in 1206, and it grew rapidly under him and his descendants. Wars over succession after the death of Mongke Khan in 1259 split it, and by the death of Kublai Khan in 1294 it had fractured into four khanates: the Golden Horde, the Chagatai Khanate, the Ilkhanate and the Yuan dynasty in China.
