Abong-Mbang is a town and commune in the Haut-Nyong department of Cameroon's East Region, at the junction of National Route 10 and the road south to Lomié, about 178 kilometres west of the capital Yaoundé. It is the seat of Haut-Nyong department, hosts one of the East Region's four Courts of First Instance and a prefectural prison, and has served as an important commercial center since Cameroon's 1960 independence. The town is the principal settlement of the Maka people, a Bantu speaking group, and the Nyong River, navigable for about 160 kilometres, forms its northern border. Its estimated urban population was about 18,700 in 2001.
