Amathus was one of the ancient royal cities of Cyprus until about 300 BC, situated on the island southern coast near Agios Tychonas, roughly six miles east of Limassol. Its cult sanctuary of Aphrodite ranked as the second most important sanctuary to the goddess on Cyprus, after the sanctuary at Paphos.
