Annapolis is the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland and the county seat of Anne Arundel County, situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, about 25 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles east of Washington, D.C. It forms part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and briefly served as the temporary national capital in 1783 and 1784.
