Aswan

Aswan is a city in Upper Egypt and capital of the Aswan Governorate, among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with recorded history spanning more than 2,600 years. Located just north of the Aswan Dam on the Nile's east bank at the first cataract, it served as the southern frontier of Ancient Egypt, and its local quarries supplied granite for many ancient Egyptian monuments and remain in operation today; the modern city has expanded to include the formerly separate community on Elephantine Island. Aswan includes five monuments within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Nubian Monuments, from Abu Simbel to Philae, among them the Old and Middle Kingdom tombs of Qubbet el-Hawa, the town of Elephantine, the stone quarries and Unfinished Obelisk, the Monastery of St. Simeon and the Fatimid Cemetery, and its Nubian Museum holds finds from the international campaign that documented Lower Nubia's monuments before the Aswan Dam's floodwaters covered them.
