Avaris was the capital of Egypt under the Hyksos, located at the modern archaeological site of Tell el-Dab'a in the northeastern Nile Delta, in Egypt's Sharqia Governorate. Originally founded under the 12th Dynasty pharaoh Amenemhat I, it was taken over by the Hyksos and grew into a major trade hub with a harbor capable of hosting more than 300 ships in season. It fell to the pharaoh Ahmose I in the 16th century BC, ending Hyksos rule, and was later superseded by the nearby city of Pi-Ramesses.
