Awka

Awka is the capital city of Anambra State in southeastern Nigeria, an administrative center since pre-colonial times that was formally declared state capital on 21 August 1991 when Anambra State was divided to create the new Anambra and Enugu states. The city had an estimated population of 301,657 at the 2006 census, while the wider Awka South and Awka North local government areas reached an estimated 430,200 people by 2022. Awka lies about 199 kilometers by road north of Port Harcourt in the densely populated Igbo heartland of southeastern Nigeria, positioned midway between Onitsha and Enugu on the West-East Federal highway, a location that shaped its choice as an administrative center under both colonial authorities and the modern Anambra State government.
