Bari is the capital city of the Metropolitan City of Bari and of the region of Apulia, on the Adriatic Sea in southern Italy, and one of the most important economic centers of mainland southern Italy. The old town, a dense maze of narrow medieval streets around the harbor, holds the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, a major pilgrimage site, while the modern city serves as a regional port, university center and trade fair hub.
