Southern Europe is a loosely defined subregion of Europe centered on three peninsulas, the Iberian, the Italian and the Balkan, and is also known as Mediterranean Europe for the sea that shapes its geography and its mostly subtropical Mediterranean climate. The United Nations geoscheme places Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Vatican City and Gibraltar within it. Ancient Greece and Rome built much of the shared classical framework of European civilization here, and the region is predominantly Romance-speaking and Roman Catholic today.
