Catania is the second-largest city on the island of Sicily in Italy, after Palermo, both by area and population, lying on the eastern coast in the shadow of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. Repeatedly rebuilt after earthquakes and eruptions, the city's late-baroque center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Catania today serves as a major port, university town and industrial and commercial hub for eastern Sicily.
