FAQs

Is Bern the official capital of Switzerland?

No. Bern is Switzerland's de facto capital and seat of government, not a constitutionally named capital.

Bern functions as Switzerland's capital in practice and is often called the federal city, but Switzerland's constitution does not name any city as the country's official capital. Instead it designates Bern only as the seat of the federal government, which is why Bern is described as the country's de facto rather than legally designated capital.
