Bouake is the second largest city in Ivory Coast, about 350 kilometres north of Abidjan and 100 kilometres northeast of Yamoussoukro, and serves as capital of the Vallee du Bandama District, Gbeke Region and Bouake Department. Founded in 1899 along the Abidjan-Niger Railway, it had a city-proper population of 740,000 and a total population of 832,371 at the 2021 census.
