Bunia

Bunia is the capital of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on a plateau about 30 kilometers west of Lake Albert and close to the Ituri Rainforest. The 2015 census recorded 900,666 residents in the city, with roughly 486,000 in the urban core, and it has been projected among Africa's fastest growing cities. Bunia became internationally known during the Ituri conflict between the Lendu and Hema peoples and the wider Second Congo War, and it hosted one of Africa's largest United Nations peacekeeping deployments. The surrounding region's gold mines have been both an economic asset and a source of conflict, and the city remains an important trade link to Uganda and South Sudan.
