Butha-Buthe is the capital of Butha-Buthe district in northern Lesotho, named for the mountain to its north, a name meaning place of lying down. It was founded in 1884 to give the local ruler a place to pay taxes without traveling to the more distant town of Hlotse. The 2016 census recorded 35,108 residents, and the district has a subtropical highland climate with a mean annual temperature around 22.2 degrees Celsius and about 666 millimeters of yearly rainfall. The town is home to Bokoro High School, which maintains a sister school relationship with a school in Ottawa, Canada.
