East London is a city on South Africa's southeastern coast in the Eastern Cape province, where the Buffalo River meets the Indian Ocean. It is the country's only major river port and has historically served as an industrial and trading center for the surrounding region, with a significant automotive manufacturing sector. The city grew around a British colonial military settlement in the nineteenth century and today anchors the Buffalo City metropolitan municipality.
