Eldoret

Eldoret is a city in Kenya's Rift Valley region and capital of Uasin Gishu County, with a population of 475,716 at the 2019 census, the fifth largest urban center in the country; it was formally granted city status on August 15, 2024. It grew from a settlement known as "Farm 64," named for its distance from the Londiani railhead, after Afrikaner settlers arrived in 1908 and turned the surrounding plateau into a farming zone. Eldoret is now Kenya's second-largest medical destination after Nairobi and hosts the country's second-busiest cargo airport, and it is widely known as a training center for distance runners who have gone on to win Olympic and world championship medals.
