Enugu is the capital city of Enugu State in southeastern Nigeria. Its population was about 876,000 at the 2022 census, ranking it the ninth largest city in the country. Founded as a township in 1909 and named from the Igbo phrase for "hill top," Enugu is nicknamed the "Coal City" for the coal mining that drove its early industrial growth, and it remains regarded as the capital of Igboland.
